Durham County’s Justice Services Department used the Recovery Month proclamation to present an event calendar and describe harm‑reduction and peer‑support programming for September. George O’Brien, introduced as a state‑certified clinician with Justice Services, spoke about the role of treatment and recovery supports for justice‑involved residents and people with substance‑use disorders.
"Recovery is real," George O’Brien told the board, describing recovery as a process that fosters "restoration and dignity, integrity, trust, and hope." Renee Shaw, who outlined the department’s planned events, said they will offer Narcan education and distribution, training about the Good Samaritan law, HIV and STI testing, a triggers‑panel discussion and interactive recovery events.
The Justice Services calendar was provided to the clerk for public posting; commissioners thanked staff and urged broader community engagement and touring the Justice Services facility to learn about available supports.
