Farmingdale advances water-treatment work as county and federal commitments offset costs

The Village of Farmingdale reported major progress on its water-treatment upgrades at a work session Monday night, Oct. 7. Officials said Well 1–3 is fully operational after AOP/GAC installation, and construction of a steel building to enclose the GAC tanks began with an expected finish date of about Nov. 15, 2024. Additional testing for newly monitored contaminants was estimated at about $16,000 per well.
Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer Brian Harty and Deputy Clerk Daniel Ruckdeschel told trustees that a $1 million commitment through County Legislator John Ferretti has been made to offset treatment-system costs, with $500,000 already received. The village was also informed by Congressman Thomas Suozzi of a $1.1 million commitment in the 2025–2026 federal budget; meeting notes recorded the federal commitment as "not a reimbursement grant." A master schedule prepared by engineering firm PRI targets project completion for all wells by May 1, 2025.
Engineers D&B are evaluating the ground-tank roof for repair or replacement and assessing antennae replacement on the elevated tank for AT&T, the minutes show. Village staff said Plant 2 construction is expected to re-commence on or about Nov. 6, 2024, and that PWGC is following up on required testing to secure funds from legal settlements and potential federal and county sources. John Falbo, who reported operational details, said crews are monitoring Philip Ross Industries' work at both plants on a daily basis.
The board also noted that final state WIIA grant payments for Well 1–3 will be pursued after the building enclosing the GAC tanks is complete. Trustees signaled ongoing review of Lead and Copper next steps; no final timetable for those steps was provided in the work-session notes.
