Advisory committee urges council to set aside $425,000 for CDBG-vetted services

Speakers representing the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) asked the council to restore recurring support for CDBG-vetted public-service agencies after federal changes narrowed the allowed uses of Community Development Block Grant funds.
Sarah Prem, identified as chair of the CDBG Citizen Advisory Committee, said federal shifts had made awards to direct-service agencies unallowable under the current CDBG administration and urged the council to create a long-term program modeled on CDBG that would annually allocate $425,000 from contingency funds to support essential public-service agencies. "I urge the council to establish a long term program modeled on the CDBG program and utilizing the CAC to help fill the gap in the housing assistance for LMI families created by the April 25 executive order," Prem said.
Greg Gehrig, who accepted a mayoral proclamation on behalf of the CAC in a prior meeting, reiterated the request and framed the $425,000 ask in budget context, noting citywide 2027 expenditures in staff charts of just under $250 million and pointing out that $425,000 is a small fraction of that total. Council members heard the appeal and did not take an immediate budget vote; committee members requested the council consider the allocation in the 2027 budget process.
