Commission approves amendment to allow TIF spending on public-safety items

The commission voted to amend the Clarksville Commercial Economic Development Area plan to allow tax-increment funds to be used on public-safety items other than salaries and benefits. Staff explained that police or fire would present monetary requests to the redevelopment commission for approval and that the commission would track those expenditures against available TIF funds. One staff member described the process: “The fire department or the police department would come to us with a request, a monetary request would come to the redevelopment commission, and we would have to approve that amount.”
Commission members discussed budget timing and recommended that departments present needs in July so the town can include a working budget by August for the following year. A roll-call vote was recorded and the motion carried with ayes from members present.
