Miriam Lang, a board member of the Murphy Veterans Tribute, told the Murphy City Council during public comment that the project had received a $109,218 matching grant from Collin County but has not met its long-term fundraising goals. She said the council has “determined that it is in the best interest of the city to rescind the previous verbal commitments, including the designation of land in Central Park for the memorial.”
Lang quoted portions of Resolution 24-R-1094 acknowledging a future partnership and said the city attorney advised that the prior resolution is not a legally binding contract. She said the council has offered the group a smaller, more modest tribute site within the existing flagpole area at the Murphy Fire Department that must stay within the board’s current available funds if pursued. A resident who spoke after Lang urged the council to reconsider the original site and said multiple donors support the project.
