Board rejects amendment to budget-review wording, adopts original ordinance

At a meeting of the Eau Claire County Board of Supervisors, members debated a proposed amendment to Resolution 47 that would have restored original wording describing how the committee on finance and budget reports recommendations to the county board. Supervisor Schmier moved the amendment and asked staff to identify two places in the ordinance to revert to the prior language.
"I move to amend resolution 47 in 2 places, and I'm asking the clerk to help me to clarify the 2 places," Supervisor Schmier said. Opponents said the change would undercut recent revisions intended to strengthen collaboration and transparency between the administrator and the finance committee. Supervisor Willkie urged colleagues to reject the amendment, saying, "I strongly encourage you to defeat this amendment." The meeting experienced technical difficulties with iPad displays and roll-call voting, but members proceeded to a recorded vote. Chair Coffey announced, "We had 5 yes, 22 no, 2 absent," and the amendment failed.
Following the failed amendment, the board voted on the ordinance as originally proposed. The chair called for roll-call confirmations, and the ordinance passed with 27 yes and 2 absent. The board then moved on to subsequent business.
