The chief told the council that officers Jason Hanson and Ethan Borchardt began CPR and used an AED after finding a 25‑year‑old man without pulse or breathing on July 21; Officer McGrade, a paramedic, arrived and helped restore a pulse before medics took over and the patient was transported and later life‑flighted.
"Their diligent actions and their work...literally saved this young man's life," the chief said, describing the response and noting the patient is expected to be released with no brain damage. The council approved letters of commendation and a red‑and‑white lifesaving pin to be placed in each officer’s official personnel file.
Members of the council and mayor offered thanks and said the recognition would be placed on record. The chief also said he has been in ongoing contact with the patient’s mother, who supports public acknowledgement of the officers’ actions. The awards and the chief’s remarks underscored the city’s emphasis on training and crisis response coordination with emergency medical services.
