County board accepts 2024 audit despite one supervisors objections

The Eau Claire County Board voted to accept the county's 2024 audit after a presentation by Dan Carlson of CliftonLarsonAllen. Carlson summarized the audit as an unmodified opinion — "The county receives an unmodified audit opinion," he said — and reviewed key fund movements, including reduced cash and investments and transfers from the general fund to Health & Human Services and the highway department.

Some supervisors pressed auditors and staff on internal controls during a question-and-answer period. Supervisor Polstead said a $3,000,000 overage in the Department of Human Services that did not come to the board undermined his confidence in the county's controls; he told the board he would vote against accepting the audit. Carlson replied that the engagement was a financial-statement audit and not an investigatory audit into every control decision. After the formal motion to accept the audit (mover: Supervisor Schmier; second: Supervisor Beckfield), the board recorded 23 yes votes and 5 no votes, and the motion passed.
