Horton Fields near completion; council approves $65,586 in equipment using county and donor funds

City Administrator Kevin Bronson updated council on the Horton Outdoor Recreational Fields, saying the fields are roughed in and the city is awaiting a certificate of occupancy for the concession stand before scheduling a ribbon cutting in mid–late April. Bronson also listed events the city had secured for the facility, including an Atlanta Braves clinic slated for April 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. and youth all‑star tournaments in June.
To support operations, the council approved purchasing three pieces of field‑maintenance equipment totaling $65,586. Bronson said the purchase would be funded with a $50,000 Oconee County recreation allocation and a promised $15,000 private donation. "We've got someone willing to make that donation for the additional 15," Bronson said while describing the equipment needed for infill groomers, a 90‑inch roller mower and a large sprayer.
Why it matters: The new fields and equipment support expanded youth and community sports programs, generate temporary construction and ongoing maintenance needs, and are likely to attract regional tournaments that bring visitors to Westminster.
