Superintendent: enrollment higher than projected; transfers and homeschools notable

Superintendent gave the board an early look at enrollment figures and transfer patterns, saying the district’s head count remains a moving target until the official Oct. 1 count. He told the board the district had "projecting to be 10 to 12 students down" before seeing gains and that fractional FTE accounting makes budget figures differ from actual students in seats.
"We were projecting to be 10 to 12 students down," the Superintendent said, and noted the district "actually serve[s] more than 1,250 kids" when part-time CTE students are included. He highlighted a chart showing 74 new enrollments compared with 33 students leaving the district and said homeschool numbers—seven on the chart—appear a bit higher than in prior years.
Board members asked about where new students live; the Superintendent said district staff can now look up home districts in PowerSchool and the intermediate school district (ISD) will provide a post-count-day geographic breakdown (for example, total students from East Jordan and the number lost to that district). He also explained that some students who attend part-time count as fractional FTEs ("we only get 0.33 FTEs for them"), so the budgeted FTE figure differs from "butts in seats." The board agreed to revisit enrollment numbers after the official count and asked staff to keep the board updated.
