A substantive portion of the meeting focused on required trustee training and the board's self-evaluation schedule. Trustees discussed whether the board should select a single location for joint training (SLI or TASB) and whether individual trustees should retain discretion to select sessions that fit their schedules.
Staff noted registration opens in May and that dates for 2027 are already available; trustees proposed setting a calendar year in advance so members can plan attendance. The Board President said the board will "make sure" training is accounted for in the calendar and suggested the annual planning cycle should include training decisions.
Trustees also agreed to add self-evaluation language under required training and to conduct a minimum of two self-evaluations per year. Discussion centered on which instrument to use (Lone Star governance, TASB, CASB) and whether the instrument should be fixed in the document or referenced via hyperlink in the online policy. Trustees suggested July (retreat) as a suitable deadline for an annual evaluation and discussed additional mid-year timing (January/April) so evaluations serve as an actionable accountability tool.
Staff will be asked to include the evaluation instrument choice and schedule in the final adopted procedures and provide a hyperlink or attachment so trustees can view the evaluation tool in advance.
