Cedar Hill ISD board adds School Safety and Legislative Advisory committees

During review of the operating procedures, trustees voted to add two standing committees: a School Safety Committee and a Legislative Advisory committee intended to track state and external policy developments. Multiple trustees said the district needs a focused group to watch legislation and to advocate district priorities to state and local bodies.

Trustees discussed whether to call the body 'advisory' or 'advocacy.' Some argued that 'advocacy' better captures activities that include communicating district priorities to legislators and external partners; others cautioned that policy and legislation conversations have different roles and that titles should not conflate them. One trustee summarized the distinction, saying the committee would both "advocate to the legislation...to begin Austin, to change policy, to align with what our goals are as a district." The Board President and other trustees agreed that the committee should be able to advise the board and, where appropriate, advocate on district priorities.

The operating procedures entry also called for a brief description of each committee's roles and members to be added to the document and indicated these details may be refined in a later addendum. Trustees signaled they expect passionate trustees to serve on the Legislative/Advocacy committee and to coordinate with staff when preparing district legislative priorities.

Staff were asked to incorporate committee descriptions into the final document and return the adopted procedures to the board record.
