DDA closes on Pierce properties, calls for members to shape downtown plans

The Chair of the Shandley Downtown Development Authority announced that the DDA closed on the Pierce properties on Friday and now owns the parcel that is part of the planned city-center site. "So we actually closed on that property on Friday," the Chair said, noting the acquisition increases the DDA's debt position.
The Chair said the parcel is roughly "2.22 a little over 2 acres" and that the house on the property should be empty after a short-term tenant completes seasonal business on Dec. 31. The board discussed the site's role in the DDA's broader city-center strategy and the DDA's founding purpose from 2013 to create a city center. "If you think that there are things that the DDA should be doing," the Chair said, urging members to consider programs, lead projects, or form subcommittees to influence downtown Chamblee's development.
The Chair said construction activity could begin within about six months if the project remains on schedule and encouraged members to review practices used by other downtown development authorities. The announcement follows the DDA's recent financing and property-closing work; board members said details such as financing costs and administrative obligations will shape near-term planning.
