The Dell Rapids City Council voted to approve the recommendation to hire Matt Larson as the city's Community Development Director at a starting salary of $75,000 a year.
City staff told the council Larson — the chamber’s current executive director — would bring local knowledge and experience to a role intended to unify marketing and downtown development efforts. Staff emphasized the position would provide ‘‘umbrella linkage between the Chamber, the City, [and] the DREDC’’ to advance downtown initiatives.
Councilors asked whether the new hire would perform planning and zoning work performed by the prior incumbent; staff said the mayor and administrators will retain planning and zoning duties in the short term while training the new director to understand those responsibilities.
A motion to approve the hire was moved and seconded and the council voted in favor. The hire is to proceed with onboarding and training coordinated by city administration.
