Council begins review of land purchase for Middleton Crossings site; donated parcel deemed impractical

Clerk read Ordinance No. 10-26 to authorize the mayor to purchase a parcel at the southeast corner of Middleton Road and Pendleton Court (Sublot No. 1 in the Middleton Crossings subdivision) from LIG Land, LLC; Law Director John Gasior asked that the ordinance be treated as a first reading because some dates in the purchase agreement needed correction before adoption at a later meeting.
During discussion, Council Member Jennifer Demaline asked whether a resident's prior offer to donate land could be used instead. Law Director Gasior and Finance Director Steve Presley explained that the donated parcel would require extensive infrastructure work — roadway construction, enclosure of Heider Ditch, and utility installation — that they estimated would cost “well over $1.0–1.5 million just to access the property, plus another $1.5 million for the Fire Department itself.” Presley added the sublot in the ordinance was “shovel ready,” making it a more practical option; staff said they would provide corrected agreement dates and further details at the next regular meeting.
