Board told K–3 enrollment drop may require slight staffing reductions

The district reported an enrollment decline concentrated in early grades: last year's FTE was 10,003.5 and this year's actual is 9,903.3, a drop of about 100 full-time-equivalent students. CFO Brian Berley said roughly two-thirds of the decrease was in kindergarten, with the remainder spread across first through third grades.
Berley said the district staffed this year based on a higher projection of about 10,050 FTE and will slightly reduce staffing in next year's plan to align with actual enrollment. "We staffed this year based on our projection of 10,050. So you will see next year staffing going down just the slightest amount," he said. He emphasized the district will monitor cohort trends — if lower cohorts continue it could affect future-year enrollments — and that any staffing changes would be managed thoughtfully.
