Chris Mitchell, CEO of Piedmont Medical Center Fort Mill, briefed Lancaster County Council on May 21 about a freestanding emergency department (ED) in the Parkstone development along Highway 521 that is slated to open this month.
Mitchell told the council the facility will be open 24/7 with physician staffing, advanced imaging (CT and X‑ray), lab services and respiratory therapy. “We are 24/7–365 with a physician staffed. You can walk in or be brought in by EMS,” Mitchell said, adding the site received its certificate of occupancy the prior Friday. The facility includes two trauma exam rooms, private exam rooms and a dedicated EMS entrance and lounge to streamline handoffs from first responders.
Mitchell framed the project as a local access and capacity improvement: it will reduce travel time for urgent and emergent patients, create jobs and contribute to the tax base. He also said Piedmont is a tax‑paying (nonprofit status clarified as not a nonprofit) health care entity that expects to work with local EMS on patient routing to lower ambulance turnaround times. The presentation included comparisons with the Rock Hill and Fort Mill hospitals and noted a newly opened NICU at Fort Mill effective the following day.
Council members thanked Mitchell and had no further questions; the council agenda moved on after the presentation.
