Senate approves E-Verify and SAVE checks for public hires and licensing

Senator Kelker, the senator from Dubuque, described Senate File 2412 as a measure to verify U.S. citizenship and immigration status for newly hired public employees and for individuals seeking professional licenses. He said the bill would require use of E-Verify for newly hired employees and use the SAVE program for professional-license renewals and verifications.
Kelker explained an amendment (Senate Amendment 50 31) and a subsequent amendment to that amendment (50 35) that collectively make E-Verify requirements applicable to the legislative branch, create a 10-day appeal window for E-Verify or SAVE results, designate whether appeals are heard by the legislative council or DIA depending on the employer, and require reporting to ICE and other federal immigration agencies if a check shows a person lacks legal status. "These are my comments on the amendment," Kelker said when presenting the changes. The amendments were adopted and Kelker moved final passage; the roll-call showed 47 ayes, 0 nays and the bill passed.
