BZA OKs rear-yard setback reduction for TC Transport maintenance facility at 1325 Summer Street

The Hammond Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously granted a developmental variance reducing the rear-yard setback from 50 feet to 21 feet so TC Transport can construct a semi-truck repair garage at 1325 Summer Street.
Nancy Greer, the petitioner’s general contractor, said the 3.25‑acre, I‑2 zoned site will accommodate a metal‑clad building aligned with an existing structure and located adjacent to railroad tracks to minimize residential impacts. “The proposed building will be consistent with the existing building appearance and overall characteristics,” Greer said, and described plans to pave areas that were formerly dirt to reduce dust and improve site drainage.
Staff described anticipated site improvements including roughly 78,000 square feet of new pavement in addition to 17,000 square feet of repairs, a 0.71 acre‑foot detention area, and an estimated 34 truck parking spaces. Staff recommended approval subject to final technical review and approval of building, site and stormwater‑pollution prevention plans; the board accepted the staff report and voted 5–0 to approve the variance.
