The Hammond Redevelopment Commission received an update from staff on ongoing development and community events. Anne Miller, staff, said USCO Industries — a crane manufacturer — closed on property at 5009 Calumet Avenue and is planning a project the city estimates at "$25,000,000" that will create "around 100 new jobs for Hammond."
Miller also reported that the developers of the former LaSalle hotel have submitted upper-floor site plans to the state and will work with city planning on a conditional-use variance to allow residential units above the ground-floor commercial space. She said developers have an intent letter from an upscale tavern for the restaurant space.
Miller urged commissioners and the public to attend downtown events this summer: the first farmers market since the early 2000s drew about 500 people, and the city’s Juneteenth celebration is scheduled for June 19 at MLK Park from 10 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m., with vendors and a car-and-bike show. "The market will be there every Thursday throughout the summer," Miller said.
