Panel advances bill to modernize athletic trainer licensure; amendment adopted

The House Health Subcommittee on March 18 adopted an amendment to House Bill 0658 and voted to move the bill to the full Health Committee. The amendment was presented by the bill sponsor and was described as modernizing Tennessee law so licensed athletic trainers meet current national certification standards while preserving physician supervision and public protections. "This amendment modernizes Tennessee law to reflect the current national certification standards of licensed athletic trainers," the sponsor said.
Supporters said athletic trainers are often the first or only medical providers when an athlete is injured at school or practice, and that updated licensure will better protect student athletes in emergencies without allowing independent practice. The committee approved the amendment and recorded a unanimous vote to advance HB0658 to Health full.
