Students read winning Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy entries at board meeting

The Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District honored winners of the VFW Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy contests during its Feb. 12 board meeting.
Michelle Van Ornam, High Desert principal, introduced the students and described the districts long history of participation in the VFW contests. "So Patriots Pen, the students do a 3 to 400 word essay about this topic," Van Ornam told the board as she introduced the first-place post and district-place winners.
Two students read aloud their entries. One student said, "Patriotism is a special bond between citizens and the place they call home," describing patriotism as values, respect for laws and traditions, and everyday actions that support community. The second student described keeping "American pride" while engaging respectfully with other cultures and recounted travel and family immigration experiences.
Board members congratulated the students and their families; Principal Van Ornam and the superintendent praised the students' representation of the district at post and district levels. The first-place elementary winner and the high-school winner were recognized for advancing to district competition and for recording a video entry at the high-school level.
