City Council adopts revised public-comment policy, moving comments to start of meetings

The Dearborn Heights City Council adopted a revised public-comment policy that places public comment at the beginning of council meetings and retains a three-minute time limit for speakers. Corporation Counsel Gary T. Miyake presented the revised policy and the council voted to adopt it effective immediately.
Council members said the change was intended to reduce the amount of time residents spend waiting for public comment at the end of meetings and to give commenters the opportunity to speak when they are present. "We put the public comment completely to the front where people are gonna have more time so they don't have to wait throughout the meeting till the end," the council chair said as the policy was explained. The policy passed unanimously.
