The board adopted a revision to policy EIF (academic achievement and graduation) on second reading by a 6–1 vote. Deputy Superintendent Celinda Freeman explained the change will remove additional local course requirements beyond state minimums to allow students greater flexibility to pursue college, career and military readiness (CCMR) pathways and career and technical education opportunities. The Student Health Advisory Committee had recommended retaining the health requirement, and trustees discussed concerns about potential downstream effects on health literacy, mental‑health education and equity of access.
Trustees who supported the change said it aligns district requirements with state CCMR emphasis and provides scheduling flexibility; dissenting trustees voiced concern that reducing a required health credit could leave gaps in student knowledge. Trustee discussion included assurances that health instruction remains available across K–12 TEKS and through coordinated health programs. "The health course will continue to be offered and recommended to students," Freeman said; the board adopted the policy 6–1.
