ODOT to present Reading Road safety plan; resident letter warns against two‑lane 'road diet'

Mayor Bo Bemmes announced an ODOT presentation on Jan. 28 in Council Chambers to explain a Reading Road safety and transportation proposal; the mayor said ODOT officials offered to cover 100% of the project cost and that the presentation will be recorded for residents who cannot attend. The mayor urged residents to attend, listen respectfully and submit comments to ODOT representatives.
Prior to the meeting a resident, Nicolle LouAllen, emailed Council to oppose a proposed road diet that would reduce US 42 from four lanes to two. LouAllen said that lane reductions would displace traffic onto side streets, put children and cyclists at risk near play areas and could impede emergency response when trains block crossings or I‑75 traffic diverts into Reading. She asked Council to reject the plan or require a comprehensive impact study including rail-related congestion, emergency access modeling and future-development traffic projections.
