Board asks staff to draft hydrant-meter program after commercial inquiry

Staff explained a hydrant meter is a portable meter with an approved backflow prevention device that temporarily attaches to a fire hydrant to measure consumption for billing, and said the city currently has no formal policy on issuing hydrant meters to private entities.
The Board provided direction to staff to research and develop a draft policy that would set eligibility requirements, application procedures, deposits, rental fees, metered charges, backflow prevention requirements, authorized hydrant locations and equipment responsibilities and return the draft for future Board consideration. The proposed program could include provisions for both temporary and long-term commercial use.
