Safety Director Dan Chafin told the committee that initial engineering, topographic survey and NEPA compliance work are underway for a planned MARCS communications tower and that the selected site already has electric and nearby fiber.
"With fiber and electric already there, the next move was to begin the internal zoning process with the City," Chafin said. He added that the presence of a water tower at the site simplifies power needs and that space at the fenced base could be expanded later if commercial providers like AT&T or Verizon seek to colocate equipment.
Chafin warned members the zoning and public‑notification process will require outreach because residents receive notice for tall‑structure projects; he said the City will coordinate with planning and the Service division and will return to the committee with specifics as engineering and quotes progress.
