The Population Health Subcommittee voted to advance House Resolution 7, a bipartisan measure to designate Sept. 22 as Veteran Suicide Prevention Awareness Day in Tennessee. Committee members recorded a unanimous voice vote and the chair announced the resolution will move forward.
"This is just simply a bill to recognize September 22 as a veteran suicide prevention awareness day in our state, but it's also a call to action for us to do more that we can, to serve the people who served us," Representative Pearson said.
Pearson described the resolution as bipartisan and noted support from the chairman of the veterans caucus, Monte Fritz. He said Shelby County has about 52,000 veterans and cited state-level figures organized around veteran suicide: he referenced historical national estimates (previously cited as 22 veterans per day) and an observed decline to about 17 a day; Pearson also said roughly 184 veterans die by suicide each year in Tennessee. The presentation emphasized awareness and a call for expanded services rather than a funding or statutory change.
The clerk read the vote as "9 ayes, 0 nays," after which the chair confirmed HR 7 will proceed to the next stage of consideration.
