Emergency Manager Samantha O'Dell introduced SWCA consultant Dr. Cody Stropki, who presented the 2024 Torrance County Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Dr. Stropki said the plan was prepared with Claunch Pinto Soil and Water Conservation District and multiple federal and local partners through a public engagement and comment period. He told the Commission the CWPP provides prioritized recommendations for fuels reduction, community mitigation projects and firefighter safety, and that having an adopted CWPP often "opens pots of funds" for mitigation projects that would otherwise be unavailable.
The Commission voted unanimously to adopt the plan. Emergency Management staff said adoption allows the county to apply for mitigation funding and assists coordination with the New Mexico Forest Service and other agencies for future fuels projects.
