Peekskill readies bids for structural repairs to Nelson Avenue and James Street garages

Peekskill officials said June 8 they will move forward to advertise construction bids for structural and safety repairs at the James Street and Nelson Avenue municipal parking garages, using a Mid‑Hudson Momentum Fund allocation to pay for initial design and emergency work.

Planning Director Carol told the council the city engaged an engineering and design consultant last year and now has preliminary cost estimates; the bidding process will refine final costs. "As a reminder, we last August, you approved bringing in an engineering and design consultant to design the critical structure and safety repairs to those garages," Carol said. Staff said the work will be phased: Phase 1 will address structural and safety priorities and Phase 2 would address painting, lighting and other architectural improvements if funds remain. Carol estimated that, once advertised, contracting could take two to three months.

The council moved unanimously to publish bid documents for the garage repairs as part of the Mid‑Hudson Momentum Award package. Council members also raised parking‑supply concerns from downtown business owners and asked staff to return with scheduling details to minimize disruption when work begins. The resolution to publish the bid documents was carried in the later consent‑agenda votes for routine items.
