Haywood County transfers house to Southwestern Commission for HOME program rehab

The Haywood County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to transfer the single‑family home at 392 Robinwood Drive in Waynesville to the Southwestern Commission. The Southwestern Commission, which administers HOME funds for the Southwestern NC HOME Consortium, will rehabilitate the property in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and place income and affordability restrictions on the deed so the appraised value can count as match for future HOME projects.
Lennay Shuler, Southwestern Commission project manager for housing, explained that the HOME program requires a 25% match for each dollar spent and that conveying the renovated property will create a bank of match that can be used for activities such as tenant‑based rental assistance or other affordable‑housing projects. The board approved a special warranty deed and declaration of deed restrictions drafted with the county attorney. Commissioners noted time was of the essence for rehabbing and returning the house to an income‑eligible Haywood County resident.
