Haywood County approves $89,803 PILT payout to local fire departments and rescue squads

The Haywood County Board of Commissioners approved a budget amendment on Nov. 18 to appropriate $89,803 in PILT (payment in lieu of taxes) funds for distribution to local fire departments and rescue squads.
"This is for our PILT funds that we received in June '24," said Christian (speaker 14), the county staff member presenting the item, noting the allocations are based on 2023 call responses. Christian said the county verified 115 eligible calls across departments and that Crusoe had the highest volume with 38 calls.
Commissioners emphasized the importance of PILT for rural fire departments that serve federal lands and tourists. The motion to approve the amendment passed unanimously.
