The Fairview Park Civil Service Commission on June 16 certified a police lateral hiring list that includes ten applicants who, the police department confirmed, hold Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification. Police Chief Shepard said the first step in the department's selection process is an agility test set for Saturday, June 20 at the Gemini Center.
Chief Shepard described the subsequent steps: "For those that pass the agility test will be interviewed and will do ride-a-longs as civilians for other officers to give input. Then they will determine who will have a background check and polygraph." The commission approved certifying the list by motion; Commissioner James Barker moved to approve and Commissioner Joslyn Dalton seconded.
Secretary Jennifer Pae told commissioners the department primarily uses social media and websites rather than print advertising to recruit applicants because print is costly and online outreach is effective. Chief Shepard also noted one current vacancy following the departure of Officer Kugler and the possibility of a second opening if another officer completes a lateral transfer to another agency. Commissioners were invited to attend the June 20 agility test.
