Haywood emergency services: shelter down from 100 to 11; state and FEMA programs in pipeline

Emergency Services Director Travis Donaldson updated commissioners on Hurricane Helene recovery operations, saying the county call center has handled roughly 1,300 calls and that power has been restored across affected areas. "Currently, as of this morning, there are 11 survivors still in the shelter," Donaldson said, adding that the shelter on Armory Drive is managed by the American Red Cross.
Donaldson described ongoing post-event canvassing (completed Oct. 31), the presence of about 50–60 National Guard members assisting with missions, and the Virginia Incident Management Team working through the week on data and GIS cleanup. He said staff are coordinating with state and federal partners on hazard mitigation and temporary housing programs and that the county is collecting detailed data to plug into those programs when they are released. Commissioners asked about timelines; Donaldson said some housing options (mobile homes, trailers) depend on state and FEMA allocations and that staff are pushing for resources and exploring site-specific constraints such as access and private bridges.
