Haywood County emergency officials report 490 rescues, 5 deaths and continuing sheltering needs

County emergency officials told commissioners they recorded about 490 rescues, five deaths (three flood-related), remaining power outages and more than 300 damaged bridges/culverts/roads; the county continues to shelter medically fragile residents and coordinate National Guard and volunteer resources.
Captain Kevin Burrows of the sheriff's office reported that wellness checks reached 1,255 residents and that "the number of deaths remain at 5," with three flood-related fatalities and two health- related deaths. Burrows said no one remained missing and that curfew remained in effect from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., while noting possible inmate work crews from the region might assist cleanup pending details.
Emergency Services Director Travis Donaldson gave an expanded situational update: an updated total of 490 rescues, about 550 flood-affected properties (not counting landslide-affected properties or Canton figures), 42 structures reported destroyed and more than 300 bridges, culverts or roads damaged. He also said 24 medically fragile people remain sheltered and urged residents to call the flood helpline and visit readyhaywood.com for resources. "So far, the flood helpline, the call center 356-2020, is filled with over 1000 calls for assistance," Donaldson said.
