Students host 'Shadow the Mayor' session in Carson, unanimously back youth program ideas

A group of students acting as Carson city officials on July 29, 2026, ran through a mock council meeting as part of the city’s inaugural Shadow the Mayor Day, heard department briefings, and voted to support a set of youth program proposals.

"Today is 07/29/2026, and I would like to call this special shadow, the Merrick City Council meeting to order," said Veil, who served as the student mayor during the exercise. The students followed scripts, practiced roll call, and carried out a formal motion-and-vote process to simulate how city decisions are made.

The student council discussed proposals including more STEM and robotics programs, expanded sports leagues and health activities, volunteer opportunities, and career days. "I move to support these ideas," said Joshua, a student council member; Masi seconded the motion. The student clerk announced the vote and the motion passed unanimously in the mock session.

City staff and elected leaders used the exercise to explain city roles and procedures. An adult mayor present for the event emphasized listening and civic service throughout the session, while staff explained department duties and how items are placed on a formal agenda for future council consideration.

The event concluded with certificates, backpacks and photos for participants. Organizers said the exercise was meant to teach students how local government operates and encourage future civic involvement.
