David Francis, speaking as president of the Haywood Chamber and managing director of the Haywood Advancement Foundation, told the board the foundation had provided roughly 16 cleanup grants to help local businesses start recovery work and had set up a loan program to bridge gaps while insurance and larger assistance arrive.
"So on Thursday, I started working in on Depot Street, Hazelwood, and Canton. And so we were able to give out so far about 16 grants to help with cleanup for those businesses," Francis said. He described loan terms of $1,000 to $5,000 with six months interest-free and a 3% rate thereafter for up to 24 months, together with payroll-loan options and coordination with SBA representatives expected to be on site in coming days.
Francis said the foundation had already helped more than two dozen employees through its initial actions and that staff were working to identify relocation space for businesses that lost premises on Depot Street. He provided a Chamber contact number and email for affected businesses seeking immediate help.
