Sheriff Bill Wilkie said the county was still holding the confirmed loss of life at five and that his office would not release unverified casualty information out of respect for families and to avoid speculation.
"There's really not a great change in status for us in terms of, loss of life. We are still holding at 5," Wilkie said, adding that he wanted to ensure any publicly released information is "completely factual and verifiable." He thanked sheriffs' offices from Halifax, Yadkin, Edgecombe, Harnett and other counties for sending deputies to help secure fuel and distribution points and to assist with patrols.
Wilkie described a continued security posture aimed at deterring criminal intent around distribution points and supply sites, not at preventing neighbors from helping each other. He said enforcement would exempt people performing "essential personnel work" or genuine neighbor-help efforts and that lifting the curfew would be considered midweek.
The sheriff invited questions from commissioners and offered to follow up after the meeting when more verified information becomes available.
