County moves ahead to replace obsolete Thyssenkrupp elevators at Justice Center

Tim Sisk, Haywood County facilities director, asked the board to approve negotiating a contract with Reese Nolan and McElrath to design and manage replacement of two elevators in the Justice Center parking deck at 151 Brander Ave. "Parts are just becoming obsolete," Sisk said, and noted one unit had been out of service for 14 months while the county worked to get it repaired.
Sisk said the county has five TAC‑50 elevator units across facilities and that boards and control electronics are increasingly difficult to source; the vendor recommendation (Reese Nolan) reflected prior working relationships and proximity. Commissioners asked whether a full replacement (rails, cars and mechanics) or a modernization (electronics and control packages) would be pursued; Sisk said the procurement will return with options and pricing so the board can decide. The board approved staff moving forward with negotiation and subsequent procurement steps.
The county will receive a proposal from the selected firm and then issue a bid or RFP to elevator companies for the installation phase; commissioners requested longevity and parts‑support considerations be emphasized in procurement documents.
