Sheriff warns Red Grade remains hazardous; county to weigh access controls and signage

Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez reported to the Board on March 23 that Red Grade is experiencing unusual snowpack conditions and has been the scene of recent rescues. Dominguez said safety, liability, and resource damage weigh against opening the road to wheeled vehicles at this time and that sheriff’s office, Forest Service and road crews will evaluate conditions daily.
Dominguez said the county could use measures such as digital signage and access restrictions to balance public access with safety. No formal decision to open or close Red Grade was made during the staff meeting; the sheriff and road crews will continue to monitor conditions and recommend actions to the Board as needed.
