Traverse County approves highway construction bids, eyes federal grant and details 5-year plan

County Engineer Chad Gillespie told the Traverse County Commission that the SAP 078-600-002 bid came in at $188,572.10, below the SPRA grant amount, and that the county park PWA bid was $383,102.60, below the PWA grant amount. Both bids were submitted by Joe Riley Construction Inc. and were approved by the Board contingent on an updated DNR agreement and approval.
Gillespie said the Board also reached consensus to pursue a Federal Land Access Program (FLAP) grant to support future work. He reviewed elements of the Highway Department’s five-year Roadway and Bridge Plan, noting MSCAH 4 south of Browns Valley will have crack filling and single/double seal coating deferred until 2028, and that CSAH 16 culvert replacement was re-solicited after no bids the prior year. Gillespie also reported the arrival of two new motor graders based in Dumont.
Commissioner Kayla Schmidt moved to approve the Joe Riley Construction Inc. bids contingent on DNR updates; Commissioner Chad Metz seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. No contract award was finalized at the May 20 meeting pending DNR agreement updates.
