Wheaton child-care group gets county approval to study using Traverse Care Center rooms for daycare

Amanda Olson and Leah Krauth of the Wheaton Area Child Care Team told the Traverse County Commission that Wheaton is facing a shortage of child-care providers. "As of June 1, 2025, there will be 3 licensed in-home day care providers and Little Flock," they said, and asked the Board for permission to examine whether the county-owned Traverse Care Center's therapy and activity rooms could be used for family child care despite the building lease specifying skilled nursing only.
Commissioners voted unanimously to allow the group to continue to look into the site (motion by Commissioner Chad Metz, seconded by Commissioner Dwight Nelson). The Board’s approval was limited to exploration — staff and the child-care group will evaluate lease constraints, licensing requirements and any needed modifications before any formal proposal or lease change is brought back to the Board.
The request came during a wider conversation about local child-care capacity in Wheaton; no dollar amounts or firm timeline for relocation were provided during the presentation. The county owns the Traverse Care Center building and the Board did not authorize any immediate change of use during the May 20 meeting.
