After tabling, Traverse County backs broadband grant but declines financial contribution

Kari Kleingartner of Red River Communications asked the Traverse County Board on April 15 for a letter of support for a Minnesota DEED BEAD broadband grant that would serve two underserved areas in the county. Commissioner Kayla Schmidt moved to table the request until the next meeting to allow legal review; that motion passed 2-1 with Chair Jerrel Olson recorded as opposed.
The board later revisited the item and, upon legal review, adopted Resolution No. 25-11 supporting Red River Communications’ MN DEED BEAD grant application. The resolution states Traverse County supports the project to install fiber-optic infrastructure to improve access for rural residents and businesses. Chair Olson reconvened the meeting at 11:38 a.m. to decide whether the county should provide a financial contribution and the board reached a consensus not to provide funding for the grant application.
