Human resources director Kenny Castas presented alternative models for adjusting elected officials' pay, including modest 2.5% annual increases and one-time or staged payments. "They're not necessarily to give any guidance on pay per se," Castas said when sharing the illustrative handouts, emphasizing the examples were for discussion.
The board discussed trade-offs between a one-time lump-sum adjustment versus multi-year increases. Commissioner Clark Thompson and Clerk of District Court Renee Barton urged careful consideration of retirement-credit implications and the countys ability to afford changes given last years requested budget cuts. The chair reiterated the practical constraint: "We need to have something officially by May 1," and staff will provide precise budget impacts for the board to consider at the scheduled follow-up meeting.
