Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez (S2) updated the board on discussions about opening Red Grade to wheeled vehicles sooner than typical. Dominguez said Forest Service regulations currently restrict wheeled vehicles until April 1, and that the county must coordinate so it doesn't inadvertently cause resource damage or create unacceptable liability.
Dominguez recounted recent search‑and‑rescue operations in the area, including one case in which an individual was found hypothermic after being stranded for two days. “It's liability, what's safe for the community, and always number 1 is is human safety,” he said, urging caution. He described options the county is exploring, including targeted patrols, digital signage at the base of Red Grade, and working with Forest Service and road crews to monitor conditions before allowing wider access.
The board discussed the tradeoffs between earlier access for property owners and the risk of enforcement burdens and resource damage; Dominguez and staff said they would continue to coordinate with the Forest Service and cabin owners and report back with recommendations.
