Sheriff pilots traffic-volume software for remainder of 2025; commissioners ask for jail-cost analysis

Sheriff Trevor Wright introduced Mason Yost, Senior Executive with Urban SDK (via Zoom), and asked to buy a subscription for the remainder of 2025 at a cost of $3,200, which Wright said is covered in his current budget. The Board approved the purchase for the rest of 2025 by a 4-1 vote (motion by Mark Gail, seconded by Chad Metz); Commissioner Kayla Schmidt was recorded as opposed. Wright said the ongoing subscription would cost $17,000 for 2026 and that he would look into grant options before committing to the next year.
Wright also updated the Board on discussions with the State, Wilkin and Douglas counties about aligning jail pay schedules and revenue options. The Board asked Wright to prepare a budget analysis showing the fiscal impact if Traverse County did not operate a jail, so commissioners can consider alternatives during upcoming budget deliberations.
