County certifies Nov. 4 election results after canvass; turnout 22.9%

At the Nov. 12 meeting the Board of Commissioners canvassed returns from the Nov. 4 general election. Election Officer Rick Piepho reported total turnout of 22.9% with 5,258 ballots cast. The board considered seven groups of provisional or challenged ballots and accepted 62 for counting; after those inclusions the board certified the final results, with one change in the Newton City Commission race where the first and second place totals switched.
Becky Reimer moved to certify the final results and Don Schroeder seconded the motion; the board voted unanimously to certify. The minutes record that accepted provisional ballots were opened and scanned into the tabulation system by staff before final certification.
