City Manager Ethan Reimer told the Halstead City Council on Oct. 27 that staff submitted a letter of intent under the Hazard Mitigation Grant program for a project that would replace and upsize the backup generator serving City Hall and Fire/EMS and install four backup generators at the city's lift stations.
Reimer said staff is considering natural-gas-powered generators for the lift stations where gas mains are nearby, while the City Hall generator would remain diesel and be upsized to support emergency operations. He described the project estimate at $250,000 with a federal cost share of $187,500 and a required local match of $62,500. Reimer said it was a good sign to be asked to proceed beyond the letter of intent stage, and the council gave consensus for staff to continue work on the grant application.
No formal vote was required at the meeting; council consensus authorized staff to develop refined cost estimates and move forward with application materials. If awarded, the project would increase the city's backup power capacity for emergency operations and critical lift-station infrastructure.
