Library reports progress on diseased microfilm project; 15,000 reels processed annually

State Archivist Greg Crawford reported the Library sends roughly 15,000 reels yearly to a vendor to identify diseased microfilm, duplicates 80% of reels examined, and has about 100,000 reels left to evaluate as part of an ongoing preservation effort.
Greg Crawford, State Archivist and Director of Government Records Services, updated the board on preservation work in the Government Records Services Division, including progress on Governor Northam's paper records, the diseased microfilm duplication project, and the online Chancery Records Index.
Crawford said the Library sends approximately 15,000 reels a year to vendor Backstage to determine if reels are diseased, generate duplicate film of diseased reels, and enter target metadata into the Library's box-management system. He said about 80% of reels examined are duplicated by Backstage and that roughly 100,000 reels remain to be evaluated. The Records Analyst section also hosted a virtual Town Hall on disaster preparedness attended by more than 140 records officers from state and local agencies, Crawford reported.
