Library of Virginia warns loss of IMLS funding could force major changes

The Library of Virginia informed its board April 11 that federal aid provided through the Institute of Museum and Library Services is a substantial portion of its operating budget and its future is uncertain.
Librarian of Virginia Dennis T. Clark told board members that "IMLS currently provides 16% of the Library's overall budget," and said the March 14 federal executive order that calls for eliminating IMLS "to the maximum extent possible" has put renewal of that funding in doubt. Clark said federal reimbursements are expected to continue through the current fiscal year but that renewal beyond that appears unlikely, and the Library is preparing for potential reductions that could affect dozens of positions and programs.
Board members and staff discussed contingency planning but did not adopt specific layoffs or cuts at the meeting. Chief Operations Officer Dan Hinderliter told the Legislative & Finance Committee that the Library received its usual reimbursement for the current year, and staff said state aid remains appropriated by the General Assembly. The Library’s leadership stressed coordination with state and federal stakeholders as it evaluates options if IMLS funding is not renewed.
